 Members Travelogue: Girls Out Fishing

IWFA members Connie O'day, Brenda Moore and Kathy Gillen started off the New Year with an amazing fishing trip at Casa Vieja Lodge in Guatemala.  The Lodge will be hosting the IWFA Ladies for the 2017 Billfish Tournament scheduled for November 9-13.  The ladies released 50 sailfish in their two days of fishing with many doubles and triples.  Registration for the tournament opens on Feb 9 and is limited to the first 24 anglers.  The ladies reported the accommodations, the fishing, staff and food were all first rate.  Start planning to attend this ALL INCLUSIVE event which features world class fishing!

The Tournament Fee of $3500 includes everything but airfare to Guatemala City and optional excursions. Included in your fee: VIP airport reception, private chauffeured ground transfers, four night accommodations (double occupancy) open bar, daily laundry service, ALL meals, 3 full days of billfishing (4 anglers per boat), tackle, boat and house staff tips, angler gifts, and awards. This is an event you will not want to miss! The event will be capped at the first 24 anglers who register. Be prepared to place your $1750 deposit at the time of registration beginning on February 9, 2017 with the remainder of your balance due by August 9, 2017.

Poppy Brownlee fished in the No Sancocho Tournament out of Casa Vieja Lodge back in November. The No Sancocho Sailfish Shootout is Guatemala's most exciting & prestigious billfish tournament, and anglers have more reason than ever to secure their spot aboard one of the eight boats in the Casa Vieja Lodge Fleet and get the best sport fishing experience on and off the water. If you can't seal the deal, there's more than just your pride on the line-every missed bite costs anglers $20. Money from every missed bite, or sancocho is then donated to a local school in Puerto San Jose. Even with some of the best anglers in the world participating, the past tournament was able to donate $5,240 from 262 sancochos.  (Casa VIeja Lodge Website)

Aledia Tush and Judy Axelrod went to Costa Rica in December, here are some pictures from their fishing trip. They had a great time touring the beautiful beaches and catching Roosterfish.

Member Amanda Sabin in Los Suenos. Story shared by Heather Harkavy.

"Last week, seven female anglers from different parts of the country all came together in Los Suenos, Costa Rica to fish the Signature Triple Crown Billfish Tournament. Costa Del Mar sponsored us ladies to fish the tournament and showcase females in a positive light, defying stereotypes while having the time of our lives. Through this experience, I have gained six new friends, mentors and fishing buddies to take on this incredible sport with... from a female perspective.

We had five hardcore days of fishing, from sun up to sun down, trolling ballyhoo for billfish. We may not have placed strongly in the tournament, but I can guarantee that we laughed harder than any other team ever has in a tournament. The countdown has begun for leg two of the Triple Crown!"

Special Recognition

Every year, The Billfish Foundation (TBF) recognizes the captains, mates and anglers (including youth and ladies) who tag and release the most billfish in each of the world's oceans. The competition is categorized by billfish species, ocean, and whether the fish were tagged or released untagged. Award winners are recognized at TBF's Annual Tag & Release Awards Ceremony held during the Miami International Boat Show. The Billfish Foundation's Annual Tag and Release Ceremony will be held Friday, February 17, 2017, in the Treetop Ballroom at Jungle Island. The evening kicks off at 6:00 PM with cocktails followed by the award presentation and dinner. (TBF Website)

We are proud to announce that one of our own members, Lisa O. Everett, has been named as the 2016 Top Lady Release Angler, releasing 10 Blue Marlin and 332 Pacific Sailfish. What an incredible accomplishment! Congratulations Lisa!

The IWFA will have a table at the TBF awards banquet, for those interested in attending, please purchase your tickets at and contact Donna Wilson so that you can be seated together or close to one another.

A fun day of fishing and friends is being planned by Donna Wilson for any ladies interested in fishing the day before the Annual Luncheon in April. Once Donna has more information, that will be sent out to everyone. Space will be limited. A dinner that Saturday evening is also in the works. Stay tuned for more details!

Boca Grande Funament

The Boca Grande Funament was sold out within minutes of the email going out to the members. It's great that there are so many people interested in fishing this event. Thank you to the Sarasota Girls, Melissa Littlewood and Lin Dockendorf for organizing this fun event. No doubt that you'll soon be seeing pictures and hearing about the fun times the ladies had fishing together.

The Birthday Fairy has such a good time sending birthday cards to members, but not everyone has entered her birthday month in her personal profile on the IWFA website.  No need for the year, because no one needs to know your age - all fishing ladies are ageless, of course!  So, update your profile to include your birth month so that you will receive a birthday wish from your fishing friends in the IWFA!

The IWFA website will soon be mobile friendly making iteasy to use on mobile devices such as your smartphone or tablet will be much easier using your smartphone or tablet.

This year's theme for the Annual Luncheon will be Fishing in Friendship! We hope to see many of you there so that we can see each other, catch up or meet some of our new members as well as celebrate in everyone's fishing accomplishments.
